GDPR is coming…are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

Are you ready for GDPR? With so much information out there where do you start?

GDPR stands for The General Data Protection Regulation and simply put, it’s a regulation which will strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the European Union.

This relates to any personal data that you collect, ie: “any information relating to an identified or identifiable person”. GDPR law is complex and extensive. It’s time to get clear on our responsibilities so that we are as compliant as we can be by the time it kicks in next month. We are looking at websites first.

1. GDPR may affect your website.
Your website privacy policy may need to be updated to cover this new regulation.

2. GDPR will affect the way you collect email data.
Contact forms on your website will need clear information to explain what you intend to do with the information collected. You will also need clear opt-in and opt-out options.

Click HERE for examples of good and bad opt-in / opt-out and privacy notices.

3. Is your website secure yet?
Websites will need to be secure so that information going through them are encrypted. We do this by adding an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to the website. If you don’t see the padlock symbol next to your website, or if you don’t see https, then your website is currently not secure.

You might think that because you don’t collect any personal data that you don’t actually need an SSL, but you could be making a big mistake. Check out this short video to see why.

These are just some of the things that we all need to be aware of. More information can be found here:

If you have a website with us then we will contact you next week to discuss what changes may need to be made.

We hope that this is helpful but if you get stuck then contact your own hosting provider or website builder and ask them for more information, or of course you can call us :-).
