Is it too late to set goals for 2019?
The early flurry of emails, social media posts and blogs about goal setting for 2019 is enough to send you in a spin! Even before the last Christmas cracker is pulled, we are bombarded with messages telling us to get back into work mode.
The festive period can be a good opportunity to take stock of your business and plan for the year ahead – but it’s also important to take a proper break if you need to. For many business owners, this is the first full week back after the Christmas holidays, but it can feel like you are already lagging behind. And as for taking time to plan – well that’s easy to put to the bottom of the list while you catch up on all those emails!
Because I work with such a wide range of businesses across my WIBN groups, I see a full range of approaches to the new year. Some like to do all their planning before Christmas, so they hit the ground running in January. Some prefer to make the most of a few ‘days off’ over Christmas to work on their businesses. And others take the opportunity to completely switch off from work, so they start the year feeling fully refreshed.
The message is – don’t panic if you haven’t already created a fancy plan for the year. It’s not too late to set out your goals, and you don’t have to spend days creating a hugely complex plan. But it is important to gain some clarity on your business, so you know what you are aiming for and where you need to invest your time and resources – as this will ensure you focus on the right priorities for growing your business.
Before you get completely side-tracked into the day-to-day running of your business, try to take a pause. It often works best if you take yourself away from the office for a few hours so you have the space to focus on planning without any distractions.
Some key aspects to consider include:
- What were your business successes for 2018?
- What are you most proud of?
- What didn’t go as well?
- What do you need to do more, or less of?
- What do you want to achieve in 2019?
- What do you want to earn?
- What aspects of your business do you need to develop?
- Where do you need help?
- Who else do you want to work with?
From this you can create a set of goals for the year ahead. The key it to break these down into achievable actions – the who, what, where, when, why and how of your business. Who will take the action forward, what do they need to do, where do you need to invest time/energy/money, when does it need to be done by, why is it important, and how will you know if it’s been successful?
You may have a mix of professional and personal goals. Sometimes it makes sense to look at the whole picture – as more often than not, people go into business to gain more balance in their lives and to allow them to do the things they enjoy most. Ask yourself, what would your ideal year look like? Do you want to spend more time with your family? Do you want to go traveling? Which books do you want to read? Do you want to get fit or change your lifestyle? If money was no barrier – what would you choose to do?
Writing your goals down and outlining the steps you need to take, turns them from intangible thoughts and feelings of overwhelm, to clear and achievable actions. It can be an immense feeling of relief once you have been through an exercise like this and you are much more likely to reach your goals if you have a plan. You can get creative with it too. A vision board can be a great way to explore your ideas, to capture a full picture of your ideal scenario and act as a daily reminder of what you want to achieve.
