The Spring is a fantastic time to review and renew your skincare regime, particularly if you’ve been using the same products for as long as you can remember, or if you don’t even have a regular skincare regime to speak of!
Many people think that the visible signs of ageing are an irreversible and unstoppable phenomenon that goes hand in hand with getting older, but this isn’t necessarily the case! Exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, pollution, central heating, detergents, a poor diet – all of these factors can and do have a visible impact on the skin, but worry not! It’s not too late to address these issues, even after they have started to develop! Take Melasma, for example. Melasma refers to brown or grey patches of discoloured skin that appear, primarily on the face, as a result of sun damage or hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or as a result of taking the oral contraceptive pill). I often recommend the iS Clinical Product ‘White Lightening Complex’ to patients suffering from hyperpigmentation of the skin, as it can really help to reduce the visibility of the dark patches of discoloration in a safe but effective manner, thanks to its innovative blend of lightening ingredients and pharmaceutical-grade botanicals.
Of course, the ideal solution to reducing the visible signs of ageing that develop as a direct result of over-exposure to the sun’s harmful rays is to protect the skin from the sun as part of your daily skincare routine. To do this, I recommend wearing a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen that protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays, even when it is cloudy or you are indoors (as UVA rays can penetrate glass!). If you are looking for an effective sunscreen, I can strongly recommend iS Clinical’s Eclipse SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Sunscreen as it is oil, fragrance and paraben-free, making it ideal for daily use on oily, blemish prone and sensitive skin.
Let’s talk about cleansing! Cleansing is an important part of your daily skincare routine, as it can effectively clear the surface of the skin of dirt and make-up, allowing the skin to breathe and preventing pores from clogging up. Unfortunately, plain water or a standard bar of soap just don’t cut it when it comes to cleansing effectively! Hand and body soaps, when used on the face, can strip the natural and essential oily sebum from our skin, leaving it tight and uncomfortably dry, as well as being more vulnerable to damage from pollution and bad weather. At Appearance Based Medicine, we stock iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complex, which contains a range of bionutrients, anti-oxidants and mild resurfacing ingredients that work together to effectively and thoroughly cleanse the surface of the skin without stripping essential natural oils from it.
When it comes to moisturising, I’m afraid that the ‘go to’ night cream that you’ve been using every day for the last decade might not cut the mustard any more! As we age, our skin produces less sebum and can become dry and dull. There are also certain times of the year when our skin may become drier than at other times – take winter for example, with its extremes of temperature (from the freezing outdoors to toasty warm centrally heated offices and homes). We need to respond to our skin’s unique needs on a daily basis to ensure that it remains well hydrated and maintains its ‘glow’, so giving it a helping hand when it is really dry – for example, with iS Clinical’s Pro-Heal Serum Advance +, which actively works to heal the skin and reduce inflammation – can really help to improve the overall appearance and texture of your skin.
If you don’t already, it is also a good idea to start using moisturisers that are specifically designed for certain areas of the face – particularly around the delicate eye area. A specifically formulated cream like iS Clinical’s ‘C Eye Advance +’ product can really help to ‘slow down’ the visible effects of ageing in this area.
